How garages get found for 'MOT near me'

Nearly every MOT booking starts with a phone and the words 'near me'. Here is what decides which three garages appear in the map, and what you can change this week.

By the Lipsum Technologies team

Someone whose MOT runs out on Friday does not browse. They type 'MOT near me' into a phone, look at the three garages Google shows on the map, check the ratings, and call one. The whole decision takes under a minute.

Winning that minute is a specific job, and it is not the same as ranking a website. This is what actually moves it.

There are two competitions, not one

Search for any local service and the results split in two. At the top sits the map with a handful of businesses, and below it the ordinary blue links. They are ranked by different things, and most garages only ever work on the second.

The practical implication: if you have limited time, spend it on your Google Business Profile first. It is faster to improve and it captures the urgent searches.

Your Google Business Profile, done properly

Most garage profiles are half finished. Working through this list is free and takes an afternoon:

  1. 1Primary category set correctly. 'MOT testing station', 'Auto repair shop', 'Car service' and similar are different categories and they behave differently. Pick the one that matches the work you most want, then add the others as secondary.
  2. 2Services listed individually. MOT, servicing, diagnostics, brakes, clutches, air conditioning, tyres. Each one you list is another phrase you can appear for.
  3. 3Opening hours that are true, including bank holidays and whether Saturday morning is a real thing at your garage.
  4. 4Photographs of the actual premises. The frontage so people recognise it when they arrive, the workshop, the waiting area, the team. Add new ones periodically rather than once.
  5. 5Products or price list where it fits. An MOT price on the profile answers the question people are actually asking.
  6. 6Questions and answers. You can ask and answer your own. 'Do you do same day MOT' is worth answering before someone has to ask.
  7. 7Posts. Short updates keep the profile active. It does not need to be clever, just current.

Reviews do two jobs at once

Reviews influence where you appear in the map, and they influence whether someone calls you once they see you. That double effect is why they compound faster than almost anything else you can do.

What matters is not only the number. Recency matters, because a garage whose last review is from two years ago looks closed. Replies matter, because a calm, specific reply to a critical review reassures the next reader more than the complaint worries them. And the words matter, because a review that mentions 'MOT' and your town is a review that reinforces exactly what you want to rank for.

The reliable way to get them is to ask at the moment the customer is happiest, which is when they collect the car and it passed. A short link sent by text while they are still in the reception area works far better than a card they will lose.

What your website still has to do

The profile wins the urgent search. The site wins the researched one, and it backs up the profile.

  • A page per service. MOT, servicing, diagnostics, brakes, air conditioning, tyres. A single 'Services' page listing all of them will lose to a competitor who wrote a proper page for each. We explain why in why one page cannot rank for ten services.
  • Your town in the places that matter. Page titles, headings and body copy, written naturally. 'MOT testing in Stockport' rather than a list of every town within thirty miles.
  • Consistent name, address and phone. Identical across your site, your profile and any directories. Inconsistency is a genuine ranking problem and a surprisingly common one.
  • Prices. An MOT has a legal maximum fee and everyone knows roughly what servicing costs. Publishing yours removes a reason to call a competitor instead.
  • Speed on a phone. The searcher is on mobile data, standing up, in a hurry. A page that takes several seconds has already lost to the garage below you.

Location pages, and when they backfire

If you genuinely serve several towns, a page for each can work. The condition is that each page has to earn its existence with content that is only true of that place: the areas you cover, how long you take to get there, work you have actually done nearby, reviews from customers there.

Ten pages identical except for the town name are recognised for exactly what they are, and they can drag the rest of the site down with them. If you cannot write a genuine paragraph about a town, do not make the page.

A realistic order of work

  1. 1Complete the Google Business Profile properly. One afternoon.
  2. 2Set up a routine for asking every happy customer for a review. Ongoing, and the highest return of anything here.
  3. 3Write a real page for each service you want more of. A few days.
  4. 4Fix speed on mobile. Depends on the site you have.
  5. 5Add location pages only where you can write something genuinely local.

None of this is quick in the sense of overnight, but the profile work often shows up within weeks. If you want us to look at where your garage currently stands, send us your site and your town on WhatsApp and we will tell you what we would fix first.

Questions people also ask

How long does it take to rank for 'MOT near me'?

Google Business Profile improvements can show up within a few weeks because the profile is quick to reassess. Website ranking is slower and usually measured in months, particularly in a town with several established garages. The honest framing is that reviews and profile completeness move first, and site changes compound behind them.

Does the distance between my garage and the searcher matter?

For 'near me' searches it matters a great deal. You are unlikely to appear in the map pack for a search made on the other side of a large town, no matter how good your profile is. This is why targeting realistic local areas beats trying to cover an entire county.

Should I pay for a citation or directory listing service?

The basics are worth having consistent, but the returns fall away quickly and many services sell hundreds of low quality listings that do nothing. Getting your name, address and phone identical on Google, your own site and a handful of recognised directories covers most of the benefit. Spend the rest on reviews.

Can I rank without a website, just using Google Business Profile?

You can appear in the map pack, and some garages get real work that way. It is fragile though. You do not own the profile, the information you can show is limited, and you have nowhere to send someone who wants to read about a specific service before booking. The profile and a site work considerably better together than either does alone.
